YOUR FRIENDLY FAMILY RESOLUTION NEWSLETTER

DECEMBER 2024

Welcome to the latest update from Divorce Done Differently!

LET'S MAKE CHRISTMAS ABOUT THE KIDS

Christmas is often a challenging time for separated families.  Emotions can run high and parents feel tethered.  It is important that as professionals, we try to remind our clients, that Christmas should be about the kids.  As difficult as this may be, we have put together a few of our top tips to keep Christmas as calm as possible and all about the kids.

We regularly talk to parents about how they would like to spend time with their kids at Christmas.  Some parents share the day, some alternate years and others don't worry about the actual date and instead focus on a plan that provides quality time with their kids.

The 25th December isn't a date most children recognise.  For them it's about family, fun and probably a few presents too.

Make this Christmas about your kids.  The date probably doesn't matter.

OUR CHRISTMAS CHARITY

We are all about giving back and this year we have chosen Two Good Co. as our charity of choice.

Two Good Co. like us, believe in people, until they believe in themselves again. Everything they do is designed to rebuild self worth and independence, in order to break free from the cycle of disadvantage. With every purchase you made, we're helping to change the course of someone's life; we're walking alongside vulnerable women as they find their way home again.

Instead of Christmas gifts for our wonderful referrers, we purchased a bucket load of Christmas crackers! With each Good Feels Cracker, we are gifting a nutritious, delicious dinner cooked with love to a women's shelter…and you receive a voucher for a free scoop of Messina gelato, a party hat, an ‘Inside Scoop’ story and a Table-Talker Prompt for deeper connections around the table. We love this and hope you do too. Watch our for your Christmas cracker delivery.

CHRISTMAS CLOSURE

Our little team are taking a break over Christmas from 23.1.24 to 6.1.2025.

To schedule mediation, co-parenting coaching, parenting coordination, or collaborative services for 2025, please visit the booking page on the Divorce Done Differently website here.

The calendar is a space for parents to include details of who will have the children on what dates, holidays, extra-curricular activities and best of all, it is full of child focussed quotes with gorgeous images. Get creative, encourage your clients to fight it to their co-parent, let kids have their own calendar or keep on on the fridge. We would love you to gift this to each of your clients to help them along their co-parent journey and for a happy and healthier 2025. Click on the pic below to download your copy.

COOKING AT CHRISTMAS

Christmas is my favourite time of year. My mumma loved it too. She would decorate our home with different and extravagant decorations each year, much to the bemusement of my Pa. My girls and I now do the same, much to the bemusement of my husband too 😊. One of our family traditions that started with my Mumma and our girls, was making rocky road Christmas trees for the ones we love. The making and eating of these treats brings me pure joy. Slow down at Christmas my friends. Find some time to connect with the ones you love. Whether it is cooking, relaxing, walking by the beach or having a quiet chat, take the time to spend it with the ones who make a difference.

We are incredibly grateful to all of you for backing and believing in us again in 2024. We are incredibly grateful for the friendships we have formed that go well beyond our working relationships. Thank you from the bottom of our very full hearts.

Relax and rest up. We can’t wait to see you all again in 2025!

CHILD INCLUSIVE MEDIATION

Our Director, Shelby Timmins recently presented at the National Family Law Conference in Perth on Child Inclusive Mediation – bringing the voice of the child to FDR. She was joined in her presentation with child psychologist Clare Rowe, child specialist and FDR, Chanel Hughes and chair of AIFLAM, Emma Swart. There were over 1300 family law professionals in attendance at the conference.  Shelby’s presentation received some wonderful feedback and created great discussion on how we can bring the voice of the child into the work we do in a safe and supported way.

Divorce Done Differently is incredibly proud to be a child focussed practice.  You can read all about child inclusive work and how we structure child inclusive mediations and collaborations HERE.  You can also share this with your clients if they have any questions or concerns.

COLLABORATIVE PRACTICE ALL THE WAY FROM WA

Not only was our Director, Shelby Timmins invited to present in Perth on Child Inclusive Mediation for AIFLAM at the National Family Law Conference, but Perth provided a wonderful opportunity for Shelby to catch up with fellow collaborative practitioners form AACP, CPWA and many CPNSW professionals too.  It was a wonderful evening sharing stories, meeting new friends and hearing an update from CPWA and from AACP board member, Susan Warda on the many things that AACP has implemented in 2024 and their hopes for 2025.

FLENA

The end of 2024 has included lots of speaking engagements for Shelby, including a very special and impactful presentation for FLENA Family Law Education Network Australia at their inaugural Family Law Expo at the Art Gallery of NSW, Sydney. The day was filled with inspiring speakers giving TedTalk style presentations.

Shelby gave a presentation on Divorce Done Differently, what inspired her to leave the law and create a dispute resolution practice, how her late Mumma created her business name and logo and told her to ‘just give it a go babe’ and how divorce can be done with dignity and respect. Congratulations to Amanda Little and the FLENA team. You have truly created something special.

PARENTING COORDINATION

What is Parenting Coordination?

Parenting Coordination is a child centred process for conflicted divorced and divorcing parents .  It is a dispute resolution technique to help parents organise their ongoing parenting arrangements before, during and after they have reached their final Court Orders.

Through education, mediation and case management, the family's post-separation progress is monitored to help parents ensure the best possible outcomes for their children.  The focus is on the well-being of the child and to lower everyone's stress levels.
